FELN and New Hampshire Organizations Submit Letters to DOJ Opposing State Restrictions on Student Voting

The Fair Elections Legal Network signed on to two letters to the U.S. Department of Justice asking DOJ to deny preclearance of New Hampshire laws that will make it more difficult for college students to register and vote. One law creates a new voter ID requirement and the other adds intimidating and incorrect language to voter registration forms.

Voter Registration Takes to the Skies

Virgin America announced this week that it would offer voter registration on all of its flights. The company is partnering with Rock the Vote to allow passengers to scan a QR code on the airline’s seatback entertainment system using a smart phone. This will allow a passenger to instantly download a registration application.

The University of California Student Association (UCSA) is ginning up support among its members for a bill making its way through the state legislature that would implement Election Day registration in California.

Study Shows Threat That Misinformation Poses to Youth Voting Rights

CIRCLE (The Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement) released a study this week showing that most voters between the ages of 18 and 29 are misinformed about election rules that are central to their ability to vote this election cycle. In the 2012 election, voters under 30 will make up 24% of the voting population. Unfortunately, in 2010 only 22.8% of eligible youth voters cast a ballot, as compared to 40.8% of all voters. Many youth voters are students, increasing the importance that student voting plays in shaping our politics. As a result, colleges and universities play a pivotal role in the election process because of their ability to provide students with the information they need to register and vote.
